Learning Engagement #4
TOPIC:
The role of family connection and the so-called gene advantage is a well-known phenomenon in human history even though most countries, especially the USA, such practices might be considered bribery under federal law. In this week’s learning engagement after carefully studying the Case called It’s All in the Family (page 274), please answer the following questions from your perspectives:
Explain why it is or is not a good practice to consider the connections a job applicant might have that could enhance an employer’s business portfolio.
Discuss whether targeting the children of well- connected political or business leaders is ethical.
Imagine that you are the Chief HR Officer for a company considering doing business in China. You have been informed that many of your competitors have implemented programs to hire the sons and daughters of influential Chinese leaders. What advice do you give to your executive leadership team? Whose interests would be most important in your policy decision?
Make sure you look into available scholarly references to support your opinion. Also in your replies analyze your chosen post from a critical point of view.
PROFESSOR’S GUIDANCE FOR THIS WEEK’S LE:
You have heard the term quid pro quo to win elections quite often in former President Trump’s impeachment. Guess what, the same charges were brought up against JPMorgan Chase’s hiring practices in China and costly punishment had been handed down to those involved. I would like you to research this and similar cases and share with us your opinion and findings.

This week we are discussing visual elements in technical writing. A visual is any pictorial representation that is used by the writer to clarify, explain, and/or support an idea.
There is a wide variety of visuals, which are effective for different purposes. They can be divided in two major categories, functional and motivational.
Functional – Used to support or enhance an understanding of a topic. They can be subdivided into four categories.
Graphs – used to show relationships and patterns over time
Charts – used to represent parts of a whole or relationships
Tables – used to display and organize large amount of data, usually numerical
Illustrations – used to show how something looks or works
Motivational – used only to get the reader’s attention and motivate him/her to read the document by making it more visually attractive. They can be anything from text formatting to stunning images.
For your discussion this week, select a news or magazine article with NO VISUAL ELEMENTS. Include a link to the article in your post. Explain what types of visuals (orientation, illustration, simplification, corroboration, etc.) would be most effective for your article and why. Make sure you justify your opinion. 200 – 300 words.

1 It is the year 2026. Thanks to your impressive ASU degree results, you have been employed by the prestigious Colorado Institute™. The Institute is a leading non-profit think-tank, which seeks to develop political, business, and social leaders by encouraging them to discuss great works of literature in intensive seminars. Your task is to select three extracts, taken from either or both of Titus Andronicus and Richard III, and write a discussion guide for leaders of a seminar on the topic of ‘ethics in leadership’.

Your assignment should consist of:
your three chosen extracts (no more than 50 lines each – you may make cuts to speeches, but show where you do this)
up to 250 words on each selection aimed at the leader of the seminar, outlining your reasons for choosing it, and mapping out possible areas for discussion
You will be assessed on:
appropriate, thoughtful, and creative choice of extract;
clear and convincing explanation of your selection, laying out what you understand by ‘ethics’ and ‘leadership’ and how this differs from the positions represented in the texts (if it does);
demonstration that you understand the need for texts to open up discussion rather than close it down;
clear and persuasive writing aimed at the leader of the seminar
2 You are directing a production of either Titus Andronicus or Richard III. Which scene do you think would be hardest to direct, and why? Your assignment should identify the play and scene, and then explain what you see as the difficulties, and how you would overcome them in performance in not more than 750 words.
You will be assessed on:
thoughtful choice of scene which demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the play;
clear delineation and convincing explanation of the difficulties which shows you have thought about the challenges and opportunities of performance;
imaginative and possibly innovative directorial choices
3 Pick one speech or brief section of either play (no more than 50 lines) and rewrite/translate it into modern English. Give a commentary of no more than 500 words on what you changed, what you didn’t, and why. Please note: there are commercial translations of Shakespeare into modern English available, so be careful to avoid plagiarism. However, you can compare your own translation to a commercially available one in your commentary if you wish.
You will be assessed on:
the effectiveness of your translation: does it capture the sense of the original? is it stylistically consistent, or appropriately inconsistent? does it demonstrate an understanding of the language? [20%]
the clarity of your commentary: are you aware of the difficulties of the original and have you thought about your audience? have you communicated your process? [80%]
No plagiarized content please, add references.

Using the attached Introduction (TEMPLATE), write a 2-4 page introduction to project (not counting Title page, Reference page, or any Appendices). In this section of proposal, you will include the following information:
Introduction to the Problem (brief discussion of the area of interest, then present the subsequent subsections of the chapter)
Background of the Problem (brief historical perspective and explanation of why the problem remains unsolved at this time)
Statement of the Problem (the health care issue you are addressing in a statement form … e.g., “The problem is …”)
Purpose of the Study (why the study is being conducted … e.g., to effect change, to compare and contrast, to predict future situations, etc.)
Research Question(s) (used in either qualitative or quantitative studies) STATE RESEARCH QUESTION.
Significance of the Study (provide information regarding the importance of the study)
Assumptions (factors the researcher (you) is (are) asking the reader to accept as conditions of the study)
Limitations (factors or conditions that may affect the data and are out of the researcher’s control)
Summary (summarizes Chapter 1 and introduces remaining chapters, including the subsections for each chapter)
Remember to cite/reference all outside works in proper APA style (7th edition, 2020).
CAPSTONE PROJECT TOPIC
Summary
It is necessary to increase public awareness of the health of American children. According to Mayo Clinic (2022), “The increasing number of children with obesity has led to more cases of type 2 diabetes in younger people”. Understanding how the factors diet and exercise contribute to type 2 diabetes in American children may help prevent those children from developing the condition. The prevention of type 2 diabetes in American children can enhance population health if certain factors within their lives are met.

Research Questions
Has the increase of processed food caused type 2 diabetes to rise in American children?
How much exercise do children get?
Is the amount of exercise they get less than, equal to, or greater than the recommended amount?
Are children in food desert/food apartheid more prone to obtain type 2 diabetes?
Study Variables
Dependent Variable: Diabetes in children

Independent Variable(s): Food and exercise
Study Design
Systematic literature review
