In a minimum of 500 words, write a short literacy narrative about yourself. Literacy narratives can often have slightly different focuses, so you have a small amount of room for creativity, but they primarily deal with detailing a person’s path to reading and writing (education and experiences as a reader) and/or the impact that reading and writing has on their lives. Keep in mind that the focus here is on “literacy” (the act of reading and/or writing) and not as much on “literature” (which we’ll be talking about in class). Your literacy narrative can involve your experiences with various “great” books, but it will more likely encompass your experiences with a variety of texts, from internet reading, to newspapers, to comic books, to whatever you tend to read or even write in your spare time.

The organization of your paper will depend on the focus you want the essay to take. If you are writing about your experience becoming literate (learning to read and write).

Give examples from Christ’s article discussing the population who receive free tuition at UC Berkely.
Free college all, not just target groups.
Reference Douglas-Gabriel’s example of what the Obama administration did
Reference Carnevale et al. and the plan of the Biden administration to make community college accessible to all
Opponents of tuition-free college
Cooper’s article and a quote of someone being against it
Opponents of free tuition come from an emotional place, not logical
If education for all Americans were free, there would be a higher admissions rate which would, in turn, benefit the economy.

Before you begin to write this essay, make sure you understand what explaining a concept is. You will be defining a term, and your purpose is to inform the reader(s) about specialized information from one specific field of study. This is not an essay in which you argue a point of view. Make sure you clearly identify your term early on, and be sure to use transition words and phrases to make your paper readable. Real-life examples and interesting analogies also help to make your subject readable and even personable. Think, also, about an opening and closing to your essay that catches the reader’s attention, and remember, too, that even if you are an authority on botany, chances are that most if not all of your readers will not be: write for a general audience.
