4 steps Questions about an article review.
Step One: “What is the Purpose, hypothesis, aim, or objective of the study?”
1. To the best of your ability, describe what the author(s) were testing or trying to find out
Hint: This information is usually found at the end of the Introduction (if applicable). The article may include a purpose statement, and/or a hypothesis, and/or a statement of aims and objectives, etc. The purpose will also usually be stated in the Abstract (if available).
2. Describe the “gap” in the research that the authors were trying to fill by doing their study. Generally speaking, in journal articles, the authors are looking to illuminate, uncover, “push-forward,” or find out more about a particular facet of an overall issue or issue area.
Hint: This information is usually found in the Introduction, often in the paragraph(s) just before the purpose statement (if applicable).
Step Two: “What is/are the major finding(s) of the study?”
Hint: Look for this information in Results and in Discussion, as well as in the Abstract, and summarized in the Conclusion if there is one.
3. Make some notes about the authors’ major conclusions or findings as written in the article. Include quotation marks whenever you use their exact wording, and indicate page number(s).
4. Now write those conclusions (as you understand them) in your own words.
Step Three: “How did the author’s test their hypothesis?”
5. Briefly summarize the main steps or measurements that the authors used in their methods. Try to explain in your own words as much as possible.
6. Given your response above, assess whether you believe this study could be easily replicated — that is, repeated by other political scientists using the same methods with perhaps a different set of variables.
Hint: in other words, how did the authors analyze their data? What test/s did they use? Try to describe their methods. One of the key goals of any research study is for other researchers to be able to replicate the study — to repeat it using the same variables and see if the result is the same or different.
Step Four: “”What is the importance of this scientific study?”
7. Comment on what you believe is are the significant contributions of the experimental work in this journal article as reported by the authors, provide possibilities for future research, and offer an overall “critical comment” on study.
